LED Grow Lights
We first tried out an led red and blue mixed tube on a dormant bonsai ficus in the middle of winter. It received 8 hours a day for 3 days. Day four the tree had many little green buds. Young pomegranate "stokkies" responded well, twice as much growth compared to control plants.
According to most sources red spectrum is required for fruiting and flowering, blue for vegetative growth. We haven't done any experiments with red yet, but Two Oceans Aquarium in the V&A Waterfront are testing at this time.
Two Oceans Aquarium have been using blue LED 1500mm tubes in their plant section with great results. The power saving over metal halide and HPS is awesome, approx 80%. Lifespan should be great as LED colour will not degrade, just light output over a longer relative time. Then you can move them closer.
The blue we are using is 465~170nm,
At first the inclination is to place the lamp too close to the plant - this burns the plants. Best to start further away and then to move closer if there is no adverse reaction.
Blue should also work for coral and plant growth in marine and fresh water aquarium tanks. The blue end of the spectrum of course penetrates furthest into water. UV LED lamps (which will look purple) are also available and would also perform functions such as killing airborne germs.
